Introduction

My association with IPA and the Graduate School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy has been a phenomenal influence on my future career decisions. I have been given unparalleled opportunities and have enjoyed becoming an integral part of IPA. I have also taken several graduate courses in order to better prepare for my graduate studies. In conjunction with the Legislative Fellows internship, I took a graduate seminar on state and local policy and management. In the fall 2002 semester, I was enrolled in a graduate level course on politics and health care, a graduate level course on economics in the public and non-profit sectors, as well as a one-credit graduate independent study course in conjunction with the planning team of which I am a part.

My basic future goal is to pursue my focus on a career in public administration. My broad range of experience has allowed me to get at least a taste of many different avenues of this field. I feel that in my career, I could contribute the most in the areas of education, health, and criminal justice policy, as these are the areas in which my most passionate interests lie. I am also incredibly interested in political institutions and the people and processes that shape them. Therefore, I can envision myself working as a liaison between a law-making body and a governmental department, such as a department of education or of health and social services, either at the state or federal level. I also have a great fascination with the law, an interest that may lead me to work within a justice department, or to serve in another type of justice organization. Finally, I have a great deal of interest in the non-profit sector, and aspire to possibly work in the administrative level of a non-profit organization.

Essentially, I hope to use my skills to better the standard of living for disadvantaged populations by improving their quality of education, expanding employment opportunities, developing better health care coverage, and battling crime and violence. As has been my pattern thus far, I have built a framework within which I would like to serve, but I will never exclude any possibilities that present themselves to me. Each experience that I have had so far has led into another, mostly in ways that I never could have planned.
