Honors Thesis in International Affairs/German, 2004
During my senior year at Lafayette, I completed an honors thesis entitled “The Schelm as the Voice of Social Criticism in Three Contemporary German Novels.” The purpose of my study was to analyze the role of the main character or Schelm as the purveyor of criticism of German society as depicted in three novels. By viewing the world from the alternative perspective of the Schelm, the reader gains insight into the corrupt world the author wishes to expose. Two of the novels dealt with society during Nazi times, and the third (written by an Iraqi German) exposed the evils of Iraqi society under Saddam’s regime.
