Taking the Time to Develop Your Leadership Skills, sponsored by the Institute for Public Administration’s Women’s Leadership Development Program at the University of Delaware, is an eight-session program allowing women to practice their leadership skills in small-group settings. The program format includes readings, discussions, group activities, and workplace assignments for practical application. Sessions will be in 185 Graham Hall on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus and possibly a location in Dover, Delaware, depending on registrants. The dates include: February 22, March 8, March 22, April 5, April 19, May 3, September 20, and October 11. The registration fee of $550 includes all course materials. 15th Annual Student Mediation Conference, sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools Special Services in northern Virginia will be held March 13, 2007, for elementary and middle school students and March 14, 2007, for high school students. The elementary and middle school focus allows students to attend workshops on various topics according to their experience levels and interests. The high school focus is specifically designed for experienced high school mediators. Throughout the course of the day, these peer mediators will be able to discuss their programs with one another and generate ideas for improvement. Time is also allotted for students to attend workshops of their choice that aim to improve and develop more advanced mediation skills. The Art of Interviewing: Transforming Stories about Conflict, sponsored by Public Conversations Project will be held April 12, 2007, in Watertown, Massachusetts, at the Family Institute of Cambridge. This workshop introduces an approach to interviewing people in conflict that can help the individuals tell their stories in new ways. In the context of an interview, examining old assumptions allows people to see new options in conflicts and create the possibility of long-term change. This course is approved to offer continuing education credits. The registration fee is $125–250 (sliding scale). 2007 Regional Mediation Conference, “Mind Games: Proactive Skills for Mediators,” sponsored by Heartland Mediators Associations. Keynote speakers include Dr. Chris Guthrie, J.D., Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Professor of Law, Vanderbilt University and C. J. Larkin, J.D. Administrative Director of ADR Programs, Washington University in St. Louis. The event will take place on April 19–20, 2007, at the Kansas University Regents Center in Overland Park, Kansas. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Holtze Hotel in Overland Park, Kansas. The rate for a regular room is $79 per night; suite rooms are $99 per night. The Power of Dialogue: Constructive Conversations on Divisive Issues, sponsored by Public Conversations Project will be held April 26–28, 2007, in Watertown, Massachusetts, at the Family Institute of Cambridge. The goal of this three-day training is to equip participants with new ways to foster constructive conversations about divisive issues. Through experiential exercises, presentations, discussions, and dialogue, workshop participants will learn the key elements behind transformative dialogue. Participants will find methods for peaceful coexistence by applying tools that encourage clear articulate and understanding of values, identities, and relationships. This course is approved to offer continuing education credits. The registration fee is $375–600 (sliding scale). 15th Annual Northwest Dispute Resolution Conference, will take place on May 4–5, 2007, at the University of Washington School of Law, William H. Gates Hall, Seattle, Washington. Sessions will offer exercises and interaction with emphasis on active learning, “how-to” sessions, role plays, case studies, and time for group discussion. Staying Grounded When on the Spot: A Skill Building Workshop for Facilitators, sponsored by Public Conversations Project, will be held May 8–May 9, 2007, in Watertown, Massachusetts, at the Family Institute of Cambridge. Through presentations, exercises, case examples, and discussion, participants will develop skills in designing constructive, purposeful responses to the unforeseen and often unforeseeable during facilitations. This training will include opportunities for participants to reflect on how the personal, social, and cultural attributes they bring to the facilitator role may help or hinder them in “staying grounded” when working with people whose identities, world views, and communication styles differ from their own. This course is approved to offer continuing education credits. The registration fee is $250–400 (sliding scale). Looking Ahead
Basic Mediation Training, this four-day experiential workshop, presented by the Institute for Public Administration’s Conflict Resolution Program (CRP) at the University of Delaware, will be held on September 24–25 and October 1–2, 2007, at the historic Buena Vista Conference Center in New Castle, Delaware, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The registration fee is $625 on or before July 31 and $725 after August 1.
