NIH—Moving the Future of Mediation in the Workplace Forward

The Indiana Conflict Resolution Institute (ICRI) is dedicated to the understanding and expansion of conflict and dispute resolution in public and private arenas. The Institute received initial funding from Indiana University through a program called the Strategic Directions Initiative; much of its continuing research is funded with grants from private foundations and organizations.  Additional underwriting for ICRI’s research has come from the United States Postal Service, the National Institutes of Health, the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

The Institute conducts applied field research and program evaluation of dispute-resolution processes in public organizations at all levels of government and seeks to meet the needs of both practice and theory in the fast-growing field of alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

Current research projects involving federal government agencies include a longitudinal evaluation of employment mediation in the U.S. Postal Service, an evaluation of the use of ADR throughout the federal government with the Department of Justice, an evaluation of the Department of Agriculture’s ADR services, and examination of the use of ADR in enforcement and compliance activities at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Ombudsman Evaluation Project

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Ombudsman’s Center for Cooperative Resolution (CCR) is a neutral, independent, and confidential resource providing informal assistance to NIH scientists, administrators, and support staff in addressing work-related issues.  This ombudsman program and other methods of appropriate dispute resolution are designed to improve conflict management at NIH.  The Center offers a variety of services and programs to address likely sources of conflict, such as performance appraisals, harassment, mentoring relationships, and scientific collaboration.
