Location

A residence program on the University of Delaware's Newark and Lewes campuses, The institute features excursions, activities, and candid discussions with key government and political leaders lasting into the evening hours.

Two Ways to Apply

Teachers may apply to 1) enroll for summer session graduate credit (in which case they will be responsible for tuition cost of $1,347* per credit hour and registration fees of $50) or 2) earn professional-development recertification hours at no cost.

Cost for Graduate-Credit Enrollment

Teachers enrolling for graduate credit will be responsible for UD second summer session tuition of $1,347* per credit hour and registration fees totaling $50*.

Agenda

The Institute provides teachers with a forum for engaging in candid dialogue with education experts as well as key political and government leaders at the local, state and national levels. The nine-day program includes field visits to Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware, the Port of Wilmington, and a day in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., Institute topics include:

  • Teaching the Excitement of Politics
  • Accessing our Political System
  • Models for Engaging our Youth
  • The Role of the Media in Politics
  • The Campaign Trail

Expectations

Reading assignments will be assigned for completion before the seminar convenes. Scholars will be expected to create a well-developed, interactive lesson plan—incorporating the state social studies standards—to be implemented in their classrooms the following school year. Scholars will present their lesson plans to one another and their materials will be disseminated as a resource for other educators.
