Mock Constitutional Convention
The
Democracy Project is pleased to announce its plans to partner with
the National Constitution
Center for the second annual Delaware Middle School Mock
Constitutional Convention. The event will be held on May
28, 2004, at Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware. The
date is selected to commemorate the anniversary of the opening sessions
of the Convention.
The
Mock Constitutional Convention is designed to foster an understanding
and appreciation of the work of our Founding Fathers and to reinforce
the students understanding of a number of Delawares
State benchmarks
or "End of Cluster Expectations," including Civics Standards
1-3, Geography and History Standards 4 for grades 6-8.
Twelve schools from around the State will participate in the simulation.
Each participating school is invited to select 2-3 students who
will assume roles as delegates representing one of the 12 states
that participated in the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. Debates
will center on a modified version of the Virginia Plan that guided
the actual Conventions work over two centuries ago.
Any
school with students in grades 6-8 may apply to participate. Apply
online or request a paper application from Fran
O'Malley. Please include your school's fax number in your e-mail
request. The application deadline is May 14, 2004. Applicants
will be notified of their acceptance as they register. Registration
is on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum of 12 schools
participating. Schools may request to send representatives from
more than one state. Such requests will be considered at any time,
but second state notification will not be sent out until May 14th.
Students who participate in the event will receive a beautiful
certificate recognizing their work and efforts.
