Civic education benchmarks in Delaware have been designed to cover four basic categories of understanding with respect to civics for grades K-12: government, politics, citizenship, and participation. These essential questions are designed to help direct your examination of the civics standards in Delaware schools.

Benchmarks for Grades K-3

Civics 1 (Government)

  • Why are elections held?
  • How might elected officials represent us?
  • Why is authority needed?
  • Why should respect be granted to those who hold positions of authority?
  • Why is the respect granted to those who hold positions of authority conditional?

Civics 2 (Politics)

  • Why is respect for others, their opinions, and their property so important in our society?
  • What are some examples of each kind of respect, i.e., how do the different forms of respect manifest themselves?

Civics 3 (Citizenship)

  • Why are American citizens expected to fulfill certain civic responsibilities?
  • Why might an American citizen be expected to exercise his or her rights and privileges?

Civics 4 (Participation)

  • Why is it important to acquire the skills that are needed to participate in a group?
  • How does one acquire those skills?
