Health Policy
SPRING 2006
Instructor: Eric
D. Jacobson
This issue-oriented course presents an overview of the U.S. health
care delivery system, its components, and policy challenges. The
health care system is considered from an organizational perspective,
including an analysis of roles of patients, providers (e.g., doctors,
hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies), health plans, and private
and public payers. Based on course readings, lectures, and guest
presentations, students will gain a better understanding of how
legislative and market forces have shaped and will continue to influence
the problems faced by each component. Case studies will be used
throughout the semester in lectures to illustrate the complexity
of policy-making and to provide an opportunity to apply theory learned
in class to "real world" situations. Even though economics
and statistics are not prerequisites, the course also seeks to build
on statistical and economic analysis to examine evidence of how
the U.S. health care system actually works and can be made
to work better.
