Susan interned with the U.S. Department of Justice in Wilmington, Del., and while there worked on a number of projects. Most of these involved analytical work using a variety of databases and computer programs. Susan's experience enabled her to see the day to day operations of a locally-based federal organization.

Baltimore City Mayoral Fellows Program
Marlon is pictured with Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. His Mayoral Fellowship placement was in the Mayor’s Office of CitiStat where he was a GunStat analyst tasked with tracking gun seizures and arrests within the City of Baltimore. Data he produced assisted law enforcement officials in analyzing and predicting patterns of gun violence.

Shelley worked for the U.S. Small Business Administration in Wilmington. Her main responsibilities included developing marketing material, publicizing upcoming SBA events, and writing press releases, radio public service announcements and small business success stories. Washington Office of Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner
As a Washington Fellow, Guillermo researched issues, responded to constituent inquiries and prepared reports for professional staff assigned to the D.C. Office of Governor Ruth Ann Minner. He also monitored fiscal and legislative activity on Capitol Hill at the sub-committee level and represented the Office at hearings.

Delaware Financial Literacy Institute - Money School
Shani Gibson is pictured with the Executive Director of the Delaware Financial Literacy Institute (DFLI), Ronni Cohen. Shani spearheaded an evaluation for the agency’s largest program, the Delaware Money School (DMS), a network of free financial literacy classes offered across the state. She evaluated classes, interviewed instructors and conducted focus groups with DMS participants. Shani also represented DFLI at community events, contributed to the organization’s groundwork for an affiliate campaign of America Saves, and attended a conference in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Consumer Federation of America.

Public/Private Ventures
Carson assisted Sarabeth Shreffler, Data Analyst at P/PV on the Plain Talk program, a national community based teen-pregnancy prevention initiative. Carson's primary responsibilities included entering and analyzing survey data collected from community residents in Texas, New Mexico, New Jersey, California, Georgia, and Pre-Katrina New Orleans. He also worked as part of an application assessment committee that reviewing sites under consideration to be served by the program.

The Hickman
Nova interned at The Hickman, a nonprofit residential facility for seniors in West Chester, Pa. She worked in the Development Office assisting in their annual branding and development event, The Art of Caring which included an evening of dining, customized art displays, and live and silent auctions. She contacted artists, solicited auction items, coordinated a traveling show of the art pieces to over 30 venues throughout Chester County, and maintained the event website. First State Commercial Loan Fund
Danielle created a program impact analysis framework for the Delawareans Save! Individual Development Accounts (IDA) program that helps participants save through matching accounts, thus building assets and enter the financial mainstream. She also formulated an innovative 360 degree program evaluation process to better measure provision of service delivery functions and database design for long-term strategic planning. Her findings resulted in a written report that was presented to the agency board in August. Danielle (left) is pictured with her supervisor, Jan Slattery.

Ripken Management and Design is a for-profit business that aids in the development and construction of baseball facilities. The organization interfaces with governments, businesses and regional public-private partnerships interested in increased tourism/economic development through community teams. Nat interviewed city officials, researched fiscal requirements, created promotional materials and visited with team representatives for the Augusta (Ga.) GreenJackets, a minor league franchise of the San Francisco Giants. He is pictured with his supervisor, Jim Arnold (right) at IronBirds Stadium, Aberdeen, Md.

Delaware Emergency Management Agency
David, pictured with his supervisor, State Planner Dave Carlson, updated the 2004 Hazard Mitigation Actions for the state-a critical component of the Delaware Emergency Operations Plan . His actions included developing a framework for assessing the status of hazard mitigation plans in the state’s 56 municipalities and unincorporated county areas. David personally visited with local elected officials and town managers across the state as part of his data collection.

Maryna is pictured with Program Manager Amy Prevatt and Senior Program Adviser Marilyn Pifer. CRDF provides support for research projects conducted by scientists in Eurasia and the Middle East. During her internship Maryna assisted the staff with administration of fellowship programs for Russian scientists. Her responsibilities included working with databases and identifying reviewers for scientific proposals.

Pictured with City Administrator Cathryn Thomas and HR/Finance Supervisor Marian Delaney, Victor directed the summer recreational programming for the City of New Castle, Del. His duties included hiring staff, formulating counselor training sessions, developing recreational activities for approximately 50 campers, overseeing all financial and human resources record-keeping, and conducting performance evaluations for six summer counselors.

State of Delaware Division of Public Health
Hashini (right) is pictured with Dr.Charlan Kroelinger, Director of Delaware’s Center for Excellence in Maternal and Child Health & Epidemiology; and Center for Disease Control Assignee for the state. The center is one of Governor Minner's initiatives to improve maternal and child health in Delaware, specifically reducing infant mortality rates. Hashini performed statistical analyses on birth data for mothers in Delaware, including prevalence, trends, and risk factors for adverse outcomes. She presented her findings at the annual MCH EPI conference in Atlanta, Ga.

Emergency Communities
(New Orleans)

Andrew worked and lived in the lower ninth ward of New Orleans. He designed and implemented the first-ever summer camp for children of the Diamond FEMA trailer park in Port Sulphur, La. He also served as the Summer Public Relations Intern documenting the program and capturing some of the only pictures from inside the camp. In addition, Andrew created original educational programming, facilitated community events, and produced a promotional video.

Office of State Planning Coordination
Ezra is pictured with State Planning Director Connie Holland and Circuit-Rider Planner for Kent County, Del., Dave Edgell. Ezra helped the town of Little Creek develop a land use development ordinance, created a model county agricultural-support zoning ordinance and communicated with municipalities on the status of their comprehensive plans and updates.

Kaneisha Trott served as a Washington Fellow in the Homeland Security’s Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security. As a Fellow, Kaneisha researched pertinent issues and prepared reports/memos for professional staff assigned to the D.C. Subcommittee Office of U.S. Senator Thomas R. Carper (D-Del.). She also represented the Subcommittee at congressional hearings.

Lei is shown with her supervisor, Joanne MacKenzie, staff assistant to the Director at the Wilmington VA Medical Center. By making comparisons and analysis among alternative options, Lei conducted a cost-benefit analysis for the Radiation Therapy project. She also worked on the All Employee Survey (AES) and created a report for the medical center’s leadership on employee perception of both the hospital and each work group’s performance.

Interning within the state’s Division of Charter Schools, Sommer’s major project entailed researching best practices nation-wide of charter renewal processes and preparing materials for the National Governors’ Association Grant State Team Meeting in August 2007. Partners for this meeting included the National Center for School Change (University of Minnesota), the National Governor’s Association, the Delaware Department of Education and regional charter schools. The report Sommer generated from the conference formed the basis for her presentation at the Cross State Policy Conference on Charter Schools in September 2007 in Albuquerque. She is pictured with her supervisor, Linda Fleetwood.

Nihla’s duties included conducting an organization-wide human resources management (HRM) practices audit of compensation, benefits administration and record management processes and then coordinating efforts to remedy HRM procedures not conforming to policy and legal requirements for an international non-profit with 50 employees and 125,000 members. She also assisted in a comprehensive revenue and expenses review/analysis of more than 100 active grant–sourced projects linked to a consolidated budget proposal for the coming fiscal year.

Pictured with her supervisor Kim Wheatley (left), Deputy Director of Budget Development, Planning and Administration, Russell coordinated a three-person team responsible for collecting, analyzing and accurately summarizing data for the Government Performance Project (GPP) research initiative of the Pew Center for the States. The GPP is often referred to as a state’s “Report Card&dsquo; since it shows key performance indicators on management systems and agency activities in seven common areas. GPP results for all fifty states are published every four years in Governing magazine.
