Research Assistantships
Research Assistantships are currently available for graduate
students in the MPA and MA programs within the School
of Urban Affairs & Public Policy. Research assistants
working in IPA are called Public Administration Fellows.
The following placement areas are available through the Institute
for Public Administration.

Civic Education (see topic

Activities offered in the civic education program area include
the Democracy Projects
Institute for Teachers,
a 3-credit graduate course promoting citizenship among young
people through the improvement of civics education in Delaware;
National Leadership Seminar,
a 3-credit course for undergraduates focusing on civics and
leadership; Mock
Constitutional Convention, a program that engages middle
school students; and various other professional development
courses and activities. Assistantships are typically offered
to students interested in education policy issues.

Conflict Resolution (see topic

The Conflict Resolution Program (CRP)
is a resource dedicated to supporting transformational and
organizational changes using democratic practices in nonprofit,
public, government, and educational settings. CRP staff and
students provide education and training for government boards,
nonprofit groups, administrators, educators, and managers.
Additionally, staff members are called upon to serve organizations
and groups with special needs, such as consensus building,
meeting facilitation, and mediation.

Healthcare Policy (see topic

IPA provides a range of healthcare policy and research services to many of Delawares
governmental and healthcare organizations. These services
cover issues such as managed care, the uninsured population,
and healthcare benefits. Research Assistants experience real-world
project work, which includes working directly with clients,
writing literature reviews, conducting statistical and program
analysis, writing technical reports and research reports,
and preparing presentations for conferences and high-level
government officials.

IPA staff, students, and practitioners in public administration
work to improve the quality of local governance internationally
by enhancing capacity and the practice of democratic local
self-government. The School's annual winter session study
trip to the Netherlands provides students a chance to see
how IPA's international activities
are having a positive impact in the world.

Local Government Planning (see

IPA has a long tradition of more than 25 years of working
with Delawares municipalities, county governments, and
local government associations, as well as other governmental
agencies and civic organizations concerned with local
government issues. Research Assistants play key roles
in the municipal projects, not only providing a much needed
service to towns, but giving students an opportunity for service
learning and, frequently, acquiring technical skills involving
geographic information systems (GIS).

School Leadership and Policy (see

The Delaware Academy for School Leadership
(DASL) is designed to create a broad-based support
network among school leaders, strengthen skills and technical
competencies of incumbents, while preparing others to assume
roles in school leadership and identify and engage critical
friends to collaborate with school administrators. Assistantships
are typically offered to students interested in leadership
and education policy issues.

Water Resources Policy (see topic

Faculty, staff, and students at IPAs Water
Resources Agency provide water resources assistance
to state and local governments and the public in Delaware
and the Delaware Valley through the Universitys service,
education, and research roles. Graduate research assistantships
are typically available through the schools programs
for students with a focus in water resources.

Women's Leadership (see topic

IPA is involved in leadership development through the Womens
Leadership Development Program (WLDP). The program
is targeted at women in state and local governments and has
also been offered to women in nonprofits and in the private
sector. Training modules have been expanded into portions
of undergraduate and graduate courses. Assistantships are
typically offered to students interested in leadership development.
