Research Assistantships

Research Assistantships are currently available for graduate students in the MPA and MA programs within the School of Urban Affairs & Public Policy. Research assistants working in IPA are called Public Administration Fellows. The following placement areas are available through the Institute for Public Administration.

Civic Education
(see topic page)

Activities offered in the civic education program area include the Democracy Project’s Institute for Teachers, a 3-credit graduate course promoting citizenship among young people through the improvement of civics education in Delaware; National Leadership Seminar, a 3-credit course for undergraduates focusing on civics and leadership; Mock Constitutional Convention, a program that engages middle school students; and various other professional development courses and activities. Assistantships are typically offered to students interested in education policy issues.

Conflict Resolution
(see topic page)

The Conflict Resolution Program (CRP) is a resource dedicated to supporting transformational and organizational changes using democratic practices in nonprofit, public, government, and educational settings. CRP staff and students provide education and training for government boards, nonprofit groups, administrators, educators, and managers. Additionally, staff members are called upon to serve organizations and groups with special needs, such as consensus building, meeting facilitation, and mediation.

Healthcare Policy
(see topic page)

IPA provides a range of healthcare policy and research services to many of Delaware’s governmental and healthcare organizations. These services cover issues such as managed care, the uninsured population, and healthcare benefits. Research Assistants experience real-world project work, which includes working directly with clients, writing literature reviews, conducting statistical and program analysis, writing technical reports and research reports, and preparing presentations for conferences and high-level government officials.

International Activities
(see topic page)

IPA staff, students, and practitioners in public administration work to improve the quality of local governance internationally by enhancing capacity and the practice of democratic local self-government. The School's annual winter session study trip to the Netherlands provides students a chance to see how IPA's international activities are having a positive impact in the world.

Local Government Planning
(see topic page)

IPA has a long tradition of more than 25 years of working with Delaware’s municipalities, county governments, and local government associations, as well as other governmental agencies and civic organizations concerned with local government issues. Research Assistants play key roles in the municipal projects, not only providing a much needed service to towns, but giving students an opportunity for service learning and, frequently, acquiring technical skills involving geographic information systems (GIS).

School Leadership and Policy
(see topic page)

The Delaware Academy for School Leadership (DASL) is designed to create a broad-based support network among school leaders, strengthen skills and technical competencies of incumbents, while preparing others to assume roles in school leadership and identify and engage “critical friends” to collaborate with school administrators. Assistantships are typically offered to students interested in leadership and education policy issues.

Water Resources Policy
(see topic page)

Faculty, staff, and students at IPA’s Water Resources Agency provide water resources assistance to state and local governments and the public in Delaware and the Delaware Valley through the University’s service, education, and research roles. Graduate research assistantships are typically available through the school’s programs for students with a focus in water resources.

Women's Leadership
(see topic page)

IPA is involved in leadership development through the Women’s Leadership Development Program (WLDP). The program is targeted at women in state and local governments and has also been offered to women in nonprofits and in the private sector. Training modules have been expanded into portions of undergraduate and graduate courses. Assistantships are typically offered to students interested in leadership development.
