Overview of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health and Health Care

What are racial and ethnic disparities, and why should anyone be concerned?

The existence of racial and ethnic health and healthcare disparities has significant implications for federal, state and local policy makers, healthcare professionals and administrators, and the population at large. As the nation’s healthcare expenditures continue to rise dramatically, inadequate care, specifically poorly managed chronic conditions and undiagnosed disorders, results in higher costs.   Additionally, medical professionals are challenged morally and ethically to provide equitable care for minorities in a society struggling to overcome a history of racial discrimination and accommodate for increasing immigration. It is vital to the future of health care in our country that broad, comprehensive strategies are implemented at the federal, state, and local level to eliminate disparities.
