Department of Health and Human Services: Closing the Health Gap

Closing the Health Gap is an educational campaign designed to help make good health an important issue among racial and ethnic minority populations, who are affected by serious diseases and health conditions at far greater rates than other Americans.   This site is available in English and Spanish and promotes healthy eating habits, regular exercise, regular doctor visits, and the dangers of substance abuse.

Unequal Treatment - Institute of Medicine (IOM)

This is an excerpt from the book Unequal Treatment, which gives a brief overview of the book's purpose.   This author found that a consistent body of research demonstrates significant variation in the rates of medical procedures by race, even when insurance status, income, age, and severity of conditions are comparable.

The National Healthcare Disparities Report , represents the first national comprehensive effort to measure differences in access and use of health care services by various populations. The report includes a broad set of performance measures that can serve as baseline views of differences in the use of services. The report presents data on the differences in the use of services, access to health care, and impressions of quality for seven clinical conditions, including cancer, diabetes, end-stage renal disease, heart disease, HIV and AIDS, mental health, and respiratory disease as well as data on maternal and child health, nursing home and home health care, and patient safety.
