IntroductionThe Healthy/Walkable Communities Initiative is a multi-disciplinary partnership among IPA, the University’s Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences, and the Delaware Division of Public Health. One of a mere handful of partnerships between land-use planners and public health professionals, the initiative serves to illuminate the strong linkages between the environment we choose to create for ourselves, our transportation choices, and their impact upon our health, activity levels, and weight.
IPA works to apply this research in a practical manner. Each year it provides training to elected officials and planning commissioners. It has made a resource guide available to all Delaware towns, and works with a handful of partner communities each year, assisting them in identifying trouble spots, assess the big picture, and plan for improvements.
