As follow-up to our forum last spring (Sidewalks and Shared-Use Paths: Safety, Security, and Maintenance), this by-invitation-only policy forum addressed the challenges associated with designing, engineering, constructing, and maintaining pedestrian facilities to comply with the latest ADA requirements.
 |
With increasing importance placed on expanding transportation options, state, county, and local governments have been promoting the design and construction of ADA-compliant pedestrian facilities. The policy forum included expert speakers discussing the latest ADA requirements. Sally Conway, from the U.S. Department of Justice, was our keynote speaker and discussed the latest requirements concerning ADA compliance and responsibilities therein. Other speakers discussed design and engineering requirements, construction issues, maintenance, and funding. In addition, representatives from DelDOT provided a status report on the State Pedestrian Action Plan. The final segment of the forum included a panel discussion involving all of the speakers, as well as opportunities for questions from the audience.
The ideas, experiences, and potential solutions shared by our participants are identified and explored in the summary report below.
