IPA Research Assistants Shine at University Honors Day
On Friday, May 9, the School of Urban Affairs & Public Policy held its University Honors Day ceremonies for the 2007–08 academic year. IPA research assistants figured prominently as recipients of the many awards handed out.
Among those who received the School Director’s Citation, given “for contributions to the mission of the School through exceptional participation in the activities of CHEP’s research and public service centers, of other units at the University, and of outside organizations and agencies,” were Shelley Cook, Megan Lehman, Emily Poag, and Shannon Wilson.
This year’s Legislative Fellows were recognized for their contributions to the Delaware General Assembly.
Pi Alpha Alpha, the national honor society for academic achievement in public affairs and administration in NASPAA-affiliated programs, inducted Latoya Griffith, Andrew Knab, Hilary Mead, Emily Poag, Shannon Wilson, and Russell Zehtab-Noghiu.
University Graduate Scholars Awards for the upcoming 2008–09 academic year were won by Jason Eckley, Natasha Edwards, and Gilad Skolnick.
The Henry R. Folsom Award, given by IPA, was presented to F. Nihla Zarook for the best paper or thesis applying public administration theory and techniques in developing practical solutions to public-sector problems.
The Vernon C. Svatos Memorial Award for Excellence in GIS was presented to Nick Walls for his work with hydrogeomorphic (HGM) tagging for the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).
The School’s Excellence in Water Resources Scholarship, presented to a student who has shown superior scholarship and interest in water resources planning, management, or policy, was bestowed upon Maureen Seymour.
One of this year’s two United Alumni of Urban Affairs (UAUA) Student Awards, presented to the student who has a distinguished academic record and demonstrated outstanding public service contributions, was given to Hilary Mead.
Latoya Griffith was recognized as one of the CHEP Panel of Outstanding Graduate Students for a positive working relationship with faculty and students, demonstration of leadership in the college or outside professional work, and potential for her contribution in her chosen field of study.

IPA Students Honored for Community Service
IPA RAs Emily Poag and Tim Soper were recognized, along with others, by the City of Newark and the Town and Gown Committee for their community service work.
Emily volunteered as a mentor for third-grade students with academic and social issues at Henry M. Brader Elementary School, and Tim worked as a bilingual mentor and academic tutor at the same school.
