Ryan graduated in the spring of 2009 from Virginia Wesleyan College, in Norfolk, Va., with a B.A. in Political Science. Much of the last semester of his undergraduate work was spent as an intern in the Office of the City Manager in Chesapeake, Va. The practical experience he gained in human relations, budgeting, economic development, and other facets of local government reconfirmed his desire to pursue a Master of Public Administration degree. He is currently aspiring to this goal at the University of Delaware, while also working as a Research Assistant for the Institute for Public Administration.
Ryan’s concentration is in State and Local Government, the field in which he intends to build a career. He is particularly interested in rural towns in Appalachia and promoting both efficient government and sustainable economic development in that area. Combining this passion with the skills he gains from the MPA program and IPA projects, he hopes to become a town or county manager in this region in the future. His current work for IPA includes assisting with the development of comprehensive plans for small towns in Delaware. He looks forward to applying this practical experience and the academic enlightenment gained in the classroom to the field in the coming years.
