This by-invitation-only policy forum addressed the challenges associated with the planning and construction of multi-use pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
In recent years, state, county, and local governments have been promoting and building multi-use pedestrian and bicycle facilities. These facilities include sidewalks, trails, and bike paths. Of increasing concern are the safety, security, and maintenance of these facilities, especially given the public’s growing reliance on them as well as the impacts and guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This policy forum explored these issues through the presentation of interview findings of experienced professionals and an extensive literature review of the contemporary best management practices by Institute for Public Administration (IPA) staff. The findings were further discussed in three breakout sessions focusing on safety, security, and maintenance.
